4H beings with goals to improve school, community

Written by Jessica Maslanka, Reporter

As the students of this year’s 4H walked through the halls, the smell of their cookies followed them. They had just finished making a silver plate full of cookies for the teachers.

4H has been around for years. On Sept 17, 4H had their first meeting this year. This 4H group does community service around Monroe. Their first act was to make cookies for the teachers and staff.

Like any other group, 4H has their goals. Every few Thursdays of a month 4H plan to meet and do community service.

One of the 4Hers’ jobs was to think of possible services to do this year. Every year they make cards and visit the elderly; this year they want to do more than the obvious services.

Along with cookies and further planning, the 4Hers held an election for council. Leah Grimes was elected president.

“In 4H we always try to make the best better,” Grimes said. “We help out in our community, forge new friendships, learn leadership skills and prepare ourselves to become responsible citizens on a local, state, national and global level.”

Every 4H group has a 4H official leading it. Here the 4H official is Kathy Sasser, who started doing 4H in 2004. “Last year, Leah wanted to have a 4H club at MAHS,” Sasser said, “but it never really came together.

“I remember she talked to me about it but it was too late in the year,” Sasser added, “so this year Leah jumped right on it and I was thrilled to be a part of it.”

4H this year has several goals. “We really want to reach out to the community and make a difference,” Sasser said. “We are a growing group, and we hope that will be to our advantage so we can do more things.”

Some of the group’s goals include possibly having competitions with the other high schools, possibly contributing to the relay for life, and growing, so more service can be done.

“I think if we try hard we can do anything,” Sasser said, “and with such a great group like what we have, I think anything is possible.”
