4-H conducts fundraisers to help Haitians

As Leah Grimes, sophomore and 4-H club president, reaches for the final bead, she realizes she is done and sighs in relief. Grimes has been making bead bracelets for the past month.

The 4-H group is working hard to create bracelets to sell to help Haiti. No price has been defined yet, but they will range from 1-2 dollars a piece.

“In 4-H, we always try to make the best better,” Grimes said. “We help out our community, forge new friendships, learn leadership skills and prepare ourselves to become responsible citizens on a local, state, national and global level.”

4-H, to its members, is more than just another group. “To me,” Maggie Polson, sophomore, said, “4-H is a second family, people supporting you the whole way.”

On Sept. 17, 4-H held their first meeting this year. This group of students works together to help the community.

Like any other group, 4-H has their goals for success. They have been meeting for years; this year, they wanted to break from the regular routine and try something new. “Every year we make cards and visit the elderly,” Kathy Sasser, 4-H official, said. “This year, we want to do something different.”

This time, the group is working vigorously to create bracelets to sell during all lunches. The money raised will go to the support and rebuilding of Haiti. Bracelets will be sold the third week in April.

“The bracelet is an earthy reminder that raises awareness,” Grimes said, “and money for people in need.”

4-H continues to do all they can to help those around them.

“I think if we try hard we can do anything,” Sasser said, “and with such a great group like what we have, I think anything is possible.”
