As Jessica Matthews, sophomore, read through the piece of paper she had just received, she felt honored to be able to have this opportunity.
On April 27, the club inducted new members. The upcoming year has new and returning members excited for what is yet to come.
Beta Club is a service organization for students that excel in academics. They strive to live up to the National Beta Club motto, “Let us lead by serving others.”
“I have worked with a great group of students this year and I look forward to working with them next year and also with the new members coming in,” Seteria Abdulai, sponsor, said. “The possibilities for the MAHS Chapter of the National Beta Club are endless.”
It requires four simple steps to become a part of Beta Club. “During the spring semester, I obtain a list of freshmen, sophomores and juniors that have 90 or above averages,” Abdulai said. “The students receive an invitation to become members. They then fill out an application and have to get two teacher recommendations.”
This past year was the first one the members actively participated in service projects and attended the state convention. Abdulai is expecting more events in the future.
“We are planning more things next year,” she said, “including a kick-off social for the beginning of next year, more service projects and attending the state convention again.”
Kiley Doster, junior, regrets not being as involved in Beta Club as she could have been. “Next year, I will definitely become more a part of Beta Club,” she said, “because I know it helps with academics and looks good for college.”
Abdulai is making changes for the upcoming year. “We are inducting upcoming sophomores into the club this year, members will be held accountable for completing service hours and attendance to meetings,” she said, “and we will become a positive presence in the school and community.”
