Counterpoint: New rules benefical to students

Written by Ashley Yearwood, Reporter

As the school is introduced to new rules, the students listen to Dr. Bill George, principal, realizing that the new school year will be less lenient than previous years.

Mandated by the board of education George is determined to provide a safe and orderly learning environment, and is determined to by enforcing new rules.

George believes book bags are unnecessary items to carry around all day, especially when all students have a locker. George has made it an official rule that every student must purchase a locker for a dollar.

Not allowing book bags is a safety precaution; students can conceal prohibited items inside the bag and no one would know.

Having bulky book bags in classrooms is too much, it feels up rows and teachers cannot move down the rows of their classrooms, so prohibiting bags cuts down on space and helps keep the school safe.

Seven minutes in between classes last year was a little long. George changed the rule to five minutes, which gives students plenty of time, if they do what they have to do and head to class.

Cutting the time down helps some students stay out of trouble; it provides them with less time to get in arguments, or find themselves with dreadful consequences.

In the previous years, there was a warning bell that rung a minute before the late bell. The bell was a problem because students would gather in the hall and socialize until it rang, and they all tried to hurry and get to class in the last minute, which caused several to be late.

With three late entrances to a single class students receive a detention, but without a warning bell students head to class as soon as possible. Some students are complaining; however, George stated that if people are complaining his new rule is successful.

Water is the only liquid substance aloud in classrooms for students. Sodas and other snacks are prohibited; these items are distractions to instructors and learners. George feels that if students cannot have snacks or sodas that teachers also should not be aloud to have them. Some agree, because having a teacher eat or drink while teaching is going to give students the urge to eat.

Cutting down five lunches to four is also a brilliant idea that was introduced. It gives students more time to have lunch and socialize amongst each other. It gives students a break from learning and gives them the opportunity to improve their communication skills.

George is determined to have an immense impact on our school; his new rules are here to provide us with a safe and more instructional learning environment.
